Everywhere in Hyderabad women seems to be celebrating the festival of Bathukamma but does any one one know how the festival started and why it is celebrated. Let us find out the legend behind the festival. According to the legend there was a king named Dharmangada who belonged to the Chola Dynasty who ruled over a large part of south India. His wife gave birth to a girl child who was named princess Lakshmi. The baby survived many dangerous incidents in her life but survived them. Later her parents named her Bahukamma. And from that times onward the festival is celebrated by young girls of Telangana.

The main purpose of this festival is to pray with devotion to the goddess with strong belief so that they get their beloved husband as per their desire.  Married women also pray to the goddess to ensure peace, prosperity and good health of their family. The unique feature of this festival is that flowers and “Muggu” are arranged artisticly and womenfolk dance around it praising the goddess.
