When the news reached fans that Mahesh Babu and AR Murugadoss are combining together they were excited and when its trailer was released the film got hyped further. Mahesh Babu’s comment also made fans anticipate the film. It is now time to take a look at the movie and see if the hype around the film is genuine or not.

Shiva (Mahesh Babu) is attached with the IB department’s surveillance department and his job consists of tapping phones. He is a good Samaritan and at times his eavesdropping leads him to help people. During one such tapping session Shiva comes across Bhairavudu (S J Surya), who is the very personification of evil. The rest of the story is about the cat and mouse game between the two. Shiva has to foil the evil plot of Bhairavudu to bomb a hospital and that forms the crux of the plot.

Plus Points:

The biggest plus point for the film is the performance of Mahesh Babu who intensity lights up the screen. His action scenes add a new dimension to the new movie. And it is not just Mahesh Babu but Suryah who has put in a very powerful performance and matches scene for scene with him. Tollywood must not have seen such a evil villain since a long time. The first half is a breeze and has some cute moments of Mahesh Babu and Rakul Preet Singh. The money spend on the film is visible and it has a rich and glossy feel to it. The Camera work by Santosh Sivan is stunning and he has captured scenes with his trademark eye for the details.

Minus Point:

The main problem with the film is a weak script and some of the scenes involving Mahesh Babu are highly unconvincing and exaggerated like trying to stop a huge boulder from causing havoc. There is no consistency in the character of Mahesh Babu, with the writer sometime writing scene which do not fit in the story at all, just to please the front benchers. Songs of the film too do not impress much and a talented heroine like Rakul Preet Singh is totally wasted.

Spyder is a action thriller which while technically accomplished does not have a strong storyline. Bahubaali has shown that a film to work has to have both content as well as stunning visuals if it is to click at the box-office. What works for the film is the strong performance of Mahesh Babu and the sadistic evil act of Surya. Visually the film is stunning. Spyder could have made more of an impact if the story was more convincing and if the writer had not succumbed to the pressure of writing crowd pleasing scenes just to get some applause from the audience. For fans of the stars it is a great movie but for the regular movie goers it might not appeal beyond a point.
