Latest reports say that 22 people were killed and around 30 persons were seriously injured in a rush hour stampede in Mumbai today at around 10.30 am. The tragedy occurred on the small narrow bridge between the busy Elphinstone Road and Parel stations. According to preliminary reports 4 trains arrived simultaneously and due to the heavy rain some people slipped down and the crowd behind crushed them.
Visuals on Television showed footwear, which was scattered next to the bridge and many people on the ground were laying still. According to daily commuters it was a tragedy waiting to occur as the bridge is old and narrow and not equipped to handle heavy rush. The tragedy shows the railways in poor light with safety its least priority. Such incident give credence to view of critics that instead spending mega bucks on bullet trains the money could be utilized to improve existing infrastructure.
